General Care
Clear introductory information for people learning about stomas and drainable ostomy pouches.
Many medical conditions—including colorectal or bladder cancer, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, traumatic injuries, congenital abnormalities and certain bladder disorders—may require intestinal or urinary diversion surgery.
This surgery creates a stoma—an opening on the abdominal wall through which stool or urine leaves the body. Some ostomies are temporary and may later be reversed, while others are permanent.
Many people with an ileostomy, colostomy or urostomy use a drainable ostomy pouch to collect stool or urine. The pouch is commonly emptied into a toilet when it becomes approximately one-third to one-half full.
Drainable pouches are widely used and effective. However, emptying a pouch may still present practical challenges. When a person remains upright, the pouch outlet may be some distance above the toilet waterline, requiring the contents to be directed carefully into the bowl. Depending on the person’s mobility, reach, body size, vision or balance, this may be awkward and may contribute to splashing or soiling.
Healthcare Professionals
Supporting more practical ostomy pouch emptying.
Healthcare professionals—including surgeons, ostomy care nurses, wound, ostomy and continence nurses, enterostomal therapy nurses, and other clinicians involved in ostomy care—play an important role in helping people adapt to life with an ostomy and achieve confidence and independence in everyday self-care.
LiberOsto™ addresses one practical aspect of ostomy care that may receive less attention: emptying a drainable ostomy pouch into a conventional toilet.
Current Methods of Ostomy Pouch Emptying
The daily reality for millions of ostomy patients

LiberOsto™ is a reusable, freestanding, height- and angle-adjustable Class I medical device designed to assist adults in emptying a drainable ostomy pouch into a conventional toilet from an upright position.
Positioned beside the toilet, it provides a direct drainage pathway from the pouch outlet toward the toilet, with adjustable height and angle to accommodate the user's needs and toilet configuration.
LiberOsto™:
- does not attach to the patient, stoma, pouch or toilet;
- requires no permanent bathroom modification;
- does not replace the patient's existing ostomy appliance; and
- can be moved aside when not in use or disassembled for transportation between locations.
It may be used by adults with drainable pouches associated with ileostomy, colostomy, jejunostomy or urostomy, as well as by an adult caregiver or nurse assisting with pouch emptying. LiberOsto™ may also support drainage following colostomy irrigation when appropriate.
- Position the device
Place LiberOsto™ beside the toilet. - Adjust the height and angle
Adjust the device according to the user's pouch level and toilet configuration. - Empty the pouch
Position the pouch outlet over the funnel and open the pouch. The contents pass through the funnel and drainage pipe toward the toilet waterline.
This provides a controlled drainage pathway intended to help reduce splashing and accidental soiling while allowing pouch emptying from an upright position.
LiberOsto™ is reusable and should be cleaned and used in accordance with its Instructions for Use.
Healthcare professionals may wish to consider LiberOsto™ as an optional assistive device for adults who experience difficulty or inconvenience with conventional pouch emptying, including those who:
- have difficulty bending, kneeling or squatting;
- have difficulty maintaining balance;
- experience back, hip, knee or other mobility limitations;
- have temporary mobility restrictions following surgery, illness or injury;
- use a wheelchair or have reduced mobility;
- have difficulty accurately directing pouch contents into the toilet;
- experience recurrent splashing or accidental soiling;
- have limited vision that makes pouch drainage more difficult;
- rely on another person for assistance with routine pouch emptying; or
- prefer an alternative approach that may support greater privacy and independence.
Individual circumstances vary. Healthcare professionals would consider the patient's ability to safely position themselves, operate their pouch outlet, adjust and inspect the device, and follow the LiberOsto™ Instructions for Use.
LiberOsto™ may be introduced as an optional assistive device for routine pouch emptying rather than as a replacement for the patient's pouching system or established ostomy-care practices.
A simple question during ostomy education or follow-up may help identify an otherwise unrecognized practical difficulty:
“Do you experience difficulty, discomfort, splashing or problems with balance when emptying your pouch into the toilet?”
Healthcare professionals can then help patients determine whether this method of pouch emptying may be appropriate for their individual circumstances and direct them to the Instructions for Use and instructional materials.
LiberOsto™ was conceived, designed and developed in Canada from both clinical and personal experience by two specialist physicians, including a surgeon who temporarily lived with an ileostomy.
Development has also been informed by feedback obtained through three surveys presented to people living with an ostomy through the United Ostomy Associations of America website, with responses from hundreds of participants, as well as by input from healthcare professionals.
The underlying technology has received patent protection in Canada, among other jurisdictions, with additional intellectual property protection being pursued.
The practical value of providing an appropriate drainage point for ostomy care has also been recognized internationally. Dedicated ostomate-compatible facilities have been introduced in countries including Japan and Spain, where some public and residential washrooms provide specially designed drainage basins at an accessible height, together with water supplies or hand showers to assist with ostomy care.
These approaches illustrate a relevant principle: for some people living with an ostomy, providing a drainage point at an appropriate working height can make pouch emptying and related care more accessible and convenient.
LiberOsto™ addresses this practical need differently by providing a freestanding drainage pathway for use with an existing toilet, without requiring installation of a dedicated sanitary fixture or permanent bathroom modification.
As LiberOsto™ progresses toward commercial introduction, OstoVersa Care Ltd. welcomes observations from surgeons, ostomy care nurses and other healthcare professionals regarding:
- patient understanding and ease of use;
- suitability for different patient needs and mobility levels;
- positioning and adjustment;
- cleaning and routine handling;
- caregiver experience;
- patient acceptance and perceived usefulness;
- practical difficulties encountered during use; and
- opportunities to improve instructions, educational materials or future product development.
Feedback from patients is also welcome. Please do not submit personally identifiable patient information or confidential medical information through the general website feedback form.

Investing in Practical Innovation in Ostomy Care
A Canadian medical device company addressing an overlooked part of everyday ostomy careOstoVersa Care Ltd. is developing practical medical-device solutions intended to improve everyday life for people living with an ostomy.
Our first product, LiberOsto™, addresses a routine but often overlooked repeated daily challenge: emptying a drainable ostomy pouch into a conventional toilet.
Ostomy care is a long-established field supported by sophisticated pouching systems and accessories. Yet the physical process of emptying a drainable pouch into a conventional toilet can still require bending, kneeling, leaning, squatting or carefully directing the pouch contents toward the toilet bowl.
For some people, these activities can be inconvenient or difficult and may contribute to splashing or accidental soiling.
We saw an opportunity to approach this everyday task differently.
LiberOsto™ is a reusable, freestanding, height- and angle-adjustable Class I medical device designed to assist adults in emptying a drainable ostomy pouch into a conventional sitting or squatting toilet from an upright position.
Its adjustable funnel and drainage pathway bridge the physical distance between an abdominally higher positioned ostomy pouch emptying point and the substantially lower toilet bowl drainage.
The objective is straightforward:
To make routine ostomy pouch drainage easier and cleaner while supporting independence and dignity.
LiberOsto™ did not originate solely from an engineering concept.
It grew from the combined perspectives of clinical experience and lived experience with an ostomy.
Following decades of surgical practice, OstoVersa Care Ltd. founder and LiberOsto™ co-inventor Dr. Mohamed Foda unexpectedly experienced life as an ostomy patient following surgery.
That experience revealed practical aspects of daily ostomy management that can be difficult to fully appreciate from the clinical perspective alone.
Together with physician and co-inventor Dr. Aisha Monib, this experience led to the concept that ultimately became LiberOsto™.
LiberOsto™ has progressed through multiple stages of development, including:
Identified Need → Concept Development → Engineering → Prototyping → User Feedback → Design Refinement → Intellectual Property Protection → Canadian Regulatory Preparation → Manufacturing & Commercialization
Development has also been informed by feedback obtained from people living with an ostomy and healthcare professionals.
The current focus is transitioning the product from development to commercial manufacturing and market introduction.
The technology underlying LiberOsto™ is supported by intellectual property protection in multiple jurisdictions.
Patent protection has been obtained in:
Canada • United States • China
Additional intellectual-property initiatives support the evolving product design and OstoVersa Care Ltd.'s longer-term product-development strategy.
LiberOsto™ is classified as a Class I medical device in accordance with the Canadian Medical Devices Regulations.
OstoVersa Care Ltd. has a Medical Device Establishment Licence Number: 35247
The company is developing the regulatory, quality, distribution and operational infrastructure required to support responsible commercialization.
OstoVersa Care Ltd. is currently preparing LiberOsto™ for commercial introduction.
Current priorities include:
Manufacturing optimization • Cost reduction • Quality and regulatory systems • Supply-chain development • Third-party fulfillment • Market introduction
The initial commercial focus is Canada.
Subject to successful market introduction, manufacturing scalability and applicable regulatory requirements, OstoVersa Care Ltd. intends to evaluate opportunities for expansion into additional international markets.
LiberOsto™ is our first product, but our vision extends beyond a single device.
OstoVersa Care Ltd. aims to identify practical needs in ostomy care that may have received insufficient attention and develop thoughtful solutions around them.
Our approach brings together:
Clinical Knowledge • Lived Experience • User Feedback • Engineering • Product Development
We believe meaningful healthcare innovation does not always have to be technologically complex.
Sometimes it begins by looking differently at an everyday problem.
OstoVersa Care Ltd. is entering an important stage in its development.
The initial concept has progressed into a defined medical device. Intellectual property protection has been established in key jurisdictions. Canadian regulatory groundwork has been put in place. Manufacturing and commercialization planning are advancing.
The company's focus is now shifting from product development toward market introduction and commercial execution.
This transition creates an opportunity to engage investors and strategic partners whose expertise and resources can help support the next stage of growth.
Ostomy care serves a substantial worldwide patient population. More than 13 million people globally are estimated to live with an ostomy, including approximately 165,000 Canadians and between 725,000 and 1 million people in the United States.
The global ostomy care and accessories market was estimated at approximately US$4.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach approximately US$6.3 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of approximately 5.8%.
OstoVersa Care Ltd. welcomes discussions with prospective investors and strategic partners interested in participating in the development of a Canadian medical device company focused on practical innovation in ostomy care.
We are particularly interested in relationships that can contribute:
Growth Capital • Medical-Device Experience • Manufacturing Expertise • Distribution Capabilities • Market Access • Strategic Guidance
Our objective is not simply to introduce a product.
It is to build a sustainable company capable of developing and commercializing practical solutions that can improve everyday ostomy care.
